Algae's role in the circle of life

Believe it or not, your life depends on algae! Join Scripps' Institution's Russell Chapman as he discusses the important roles algae have played in the development of life as we know it. Series: "Perspectives on Ocean Science"

The lecture starts at 4:10, her intro is long.

Algae as food

Eating Pond Scum?

Producing algae for food & fuel

Commercializing the Algae oil

Using Algae in the Wastewater Treatment Process

Algae can be used to clean sewage water and create pigments, animal feed, and bio-fuel.

Reducing Air Pollution and making Green Collar Jobs

Algae presents a valuable way for carbon control by converting carbon dioxide emissions into feed and fuel. No fertile land and fresh water are required.

Water, sunlight and nutrients to grow algae that produces high-value sustainable fuels

"Algae.Tec is a globally focused advanced renewable oil company. Algae.Tec is commercializing an enclosed modular high-yield algae to oil growth system at the Algae Development & Manufacturing Centre in Atlanta, Georgia. Algae.Tec is a publicly listed company on the Australian Stock Exchange, the Frankfurt Stock Exchange and on the ADR market in the USA. The Algae.Tec photo bio-reactors use water, sunlight and nutrients to grow algae that produces high-value sustainable fuels such as biodiesel and jet fuel. Facilities are being constructed at Nowra south of Sydney, Australia and the Holcim manufacturing plant in Sri Lanka. Roll-out plans include sites in China, Germany and USA."

CNN Features Algae for Biofuel

Glen Kurts Vertigro system in El Paso, New Mexico

Algae is featured on CNN for its amazing potential as the next big bio-fuel. Kurts claims he can produce 100,000 gallons algae oil (378,541 liters) per acre per year. This is much better than corn which yields only 20-30 gallons per acre.

Separating Algae Oil from Biomass

Quantum Cell Fracturing Technology

Water and special catalysts are fractured at high ultrasonic intensity, using very little energy, to crack the algae membrane to facilitate extracting its oil content. Quantum Fracturing technology greatly enhances the efficiency of algae production and makes it cost-effective and viable. Quantum Fracturing technology combines pulsed electromagnetic fields (sonic pulses) and pH modification to break down cell walls, releasing the oil within the cells.
